Panheads are motorcycles that were manufactured by the Harley-Davidson Motor Company from 1947 to 1966. The difference between the panhead, or FL model as it is officially known, and the EL model, is that the panhead's motor has an overhead valve configuration. The EL, also known as the "flathead", has a side-valve configuration. The panhead earned its name from the appearance of the valve covers which are deep "D" shaped pans bolted to the top of the cylinders.
