| The
Panhead engine introduced in 1948
brought aluminum heads for better
cooling and hydraulic lifters for less
maintenance. Starting in 1947, the
shift pattern for the four speed
transmission was reversed, with first
being closest to the rider, Fourth
farthest away. Otherwise, the FL was
little-changed. This example has been
fitted with a nifty chrome oil filter,
which wasn't standard. Tank emblems
were carried over from 1947. New
serrated exhaust pipes would continue
into the Seventies. Tombstone
taillight also returned from 1947. As
before, the front fender light served
fashion more than function, but was a
notable styling feature. |
